This article explores the critical possibilities in deploying heterotopia to examine theatrical space: I apply heterotopia to two 2008 productions of Shakespeare's Othello in Finland, one in Helsinki at the Finnish National Theatre and one in Tampere at Frenckell Studio, Tampereen Teatteri. I do not speak Finnish but the experience of watching two productions of a play that I know well confirms for me the merits of heterotopic analyis. First I explain heterotopia and then I outline the complex locational politics in Othello, before applying these ideas to the productions which foreground geography rather than the more common racial interpretation.
