Molecular genetic analysis for the feed quality traits,
including dry matter digestibility, acid detergent fibre (ADF),
particle size index, grain size and starch, in two F6-dervied RIL
barley populations has revealed that few genomic locations are
involved in the control of these traits. This is surprising considering
the quantitative nature of their phenotypic expression. The QTLs
mapped to six of the 7 barley linkage groups with 1H being the
exception. However, most of the QTLs for starch (energy), ADF and
husk (fibre), digestibility (ISDMD) and grain size clustered to
common genomic regions on linkage groups 2H, 3H, 5H and 7H.
Clustering of QTLs, and the parental source of the “best” allele for
the trait improvement, will have implications on the ability to
efficiently select for the traits, and the design of an appropriate
breeding strategy to incorporate all traits into a single variety.
