Abstract In the Intensive Care Unit of the Royal Melbourne Hospital closed-loop control of hypertension based on the use of an Apple IIe computer is being developed. In the first stage of this project, an adaptive control strategy was developed using a simulation of patient response to the infusion of sodium nitroprusside. The strategy adapts the dosage increments and level to the patient's drug sensitivity and ensures that for chronic hypertension the blood pressure is reduced to target levels at physiologically safe rates. Average blood pressure is collected using an arterial cannula, piezo-electric pressure transducer, patient monitor and ADC unit. The required dosage is implemented using a commercially available infusion pump with computer interface facilities.
