Management decisions are identified as linking forecasting and planning. The importance of technology to business institutions and society is reviewed. The various techniques for use in technological forecasting are presented and their uses indicated.

A survey in a planning group discovered that forecasting is a poorly understood discipline. Difficulties existed in communicating between forecast users and forecast preparers.

A method of organising the forecasting function so as to avoid the identified problems is suggested.
