Abstract Electrokinetic remediation, a technique in which DC electric current is applied to inert electrodes for the removal of contaminants from soils and wastes, is fast becoming a commercially viable process. The principles, a brief description of a novel experimental setup, the application of this technique to remove inorganic and organic species, and the status of electrokinetic remediation are reviewed.
