The first Asia Pacific Coalbed Methane Symposium held in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia from 22 to 24 September 2008 was organised by the University of Queensland and the China University of Mining and Technology in response to the rapid expansion of the coalbed methane industry in Australia and China.

Notwithstanding the Asia Pacific focus, the meeting provided an international forum, with some 200 scientists and engineers in attendance, from Australia, Canada, China, England, Germany, Holland, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan and the USA, representing a broad range of academic, government and industry organisations.

This special issue contains 14 papers presented at that meeting and 2 additional invited papers, which bring together the latest science and technology developments in CBM including the injection of CO2 into coal seams to sequester CO2 and enhance CBM recovery (CO2–ECBM).
