Formatted abstract
Two prominent areas in biotechnology presently at the forefront of our attention are environmental biotechnology, associated with the preservation of our planet – with the development of biofuels, reduction of green house gases and treatment of hazardous waste – and medical biotechnology, concerned with the preservation of our health. Through advances in DNA-derived biopharmaceuticals, medical biotechnology has delivered therapies, and in some cases cures, to once intractable diseases such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. At the next level we now seek cures and therapies for presently intractable diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease or spinal cord injury to name a few.

Innovation in stem cell and tissue engineering technologies are essential for the future development of cell-based therapies and tissue-engineered products. The editors of JCTB welcome new submissions of high quality papers for the advancement of these technologies.
