Abstract Marco Tongiorgi was born on 17 December 1934 in Pisa, Italy, the city renowned for its Leaning Tower and the seat of the University of Pisa, whence he graduated in geology and where he conducted his entire academic career. He was the first of two sons of Liana, a high-school teacher of art history, and Ezio Tongiorgi, a distinguished geologist and professor at the University of Pisa, Director of the Museum of Natural History, and a pioneer in geothermal research.
