Formatted Abstract/Summary
Background:
Body mass index (BMI) correlates positively with insulin resistance (IR) and leptin. BMI is a risk factor for asthma in children. Inflammatory adipokines/cytokines affect insulin stimulated glucose uptake in-vitro, but to-date there is little evidence for such a role in in-vivo. Individuals with allergic asthma have a heightened inflammatory state. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between IR and inflammatory adipokines in children with asthma.

Conclusion:
We confirm other studies showing BMI, leptin and resistin to be significantly correlated to IR, however, a significant relationship between IL-6, TNF-α and IR emerged in AA children, which may explain the increased variation in HOMA we observed in this group and this warrants further investigation.
