Title The Hilltop House, Paddington, Queensland
Project name The Hilltop House, Paddington, Queensland
Project description The Hilltop House is located in the context of demolition control on a steeply sloping site in inner city Brisbane. It sought to work within the constraints of Brisbane City Council regulations for development in a ‘character’ precinct by exploring opportunities presented by site and context to extend local architectural traditions. Research Contribution: This house acknowledges the Californian Bungalow and its influence on Brisbane’s 1920s house and explores its ongoing potential as a source of ideas for dwelling at the end of the end of the 20th century. In particular, in the use of elements of form to order space and its experience, it sought ways to link the house to site and to the wider context. In this aspect and in the play of materials, it is also informed by interest in the humanist traditions of modernism evident in the work of Alvar Aalto and in instances of local modernism in the 1970s houses of John Dalton. The house organises a saddlebag arrangement of closed rooms either side of a long living hall under a low pitched gable and opens to city views to the Northeast and a courtyard to the Southwest. The living platform is carved from the steeply sloping site rather than built up artificially from a flat Finnish landscape, offering a range of settings for occupation. Internal promenades provide overlays and glimpses to courtyards and vistas to the cityscape beyond. The use of painted brick contrasted with timber provides a gentle interplay of the house’s essential materials.
