Abstract The introduction of Bufo marinus (cane toad) into Australia in 1935, has provided a salutary lesson regarding the consequences of deficient management of biological control on our native and domestic fauna. The recent elucidation of the mechanism of toxicity and biochemistry and the recognition of possible pharmaceutical benefits has potential significance for human and veterinary medicine. Up-to-date methods of diagnosis, treatment and control of Bufo marinus toxicity are reviewed.
