Abstract 'Head of the River Races' event was invested with significance for all the main parties concerned. These parties included the rowers, the spectators, and the readers of the newspaper reports with spectators indulging in their usual, partly carnivalesque activities secure in the knowledge of the races' martial merits and of the loyalty of their middle-class fellows. It was further aided by the hanging of signs encouraging enlistments and by the fact that public school sports had been invested with a considerable element of martial meaning prior to the war, the race could be understood by the participants as training for the war effort through the learning of skills such as courage and determination.
