Abstract This collection of plays shows that a broad spectrum of concerns continues to preoccupy Canadian theatre: from historical explorations complete with complex intertextualities, to the aftershocks of the "scoopup" of Native children, to the latest family angst drama by Michel Tremblay, these plays articulate the strength of contemporary theatre. Madame Fanny DuBeau, a possibly Parisian hotel owner with a questionable sense of living within the law, presses into service everyone around her to make a living by performing for goldminers in 1870 versions of Hamlet, A Christmas Carol, and The Last of the Mohicans.
