Abstract The Enshu coast is located on the Southern side of Honshu island (Japan). The West part of the coast, so-called Omotehama, spans from Irago Cape to the mouth of the Tenryu river. Key features of the coastline include a relatively flat coastal zone from the Tenryu river mouth to the Hamana (or Hamanako) Lake system, and some sandstone cliffs from the Hamana Lake towards Irago Cape, the Akabane fishing harbour and the Irago Cape which marks the entrance of the Ise Bay. The Enshu coast has been adversely affected by typhoon-generated high waves and tides, and severe tsunamis.
