| Abstract/Summary
|
Two techniques for detection of boundary layer transition which employ liquid crystal coatings are compared for incompressible flow over a flat plate. Temperature sensitive liquid crystals are used to measure the characteristic increase in heat transfer coefficient through the transitional region on a uniformly heated surface. Shear sensitive liquid crystals are used to detect the high surface shear stress at the end of transition. The objective of this work was to assess the suitability of these techniques for transition detection in low speed flows. Both techniques can be used to locate transition and to obtain quantitative information about surface phenomena, but the destabilizing influence of heating in the first technique must be considered.
