Abstract/Summary My research will focus on how Lardil and Kaiadilt people experience their country through marine hunting and fishing and how this relationship is expressed through forms of social inscription. This research contributes to an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery project titled "Isolation, Insularity and Change in Island Populations: An Interdisciplinary Study of Aboriginal Cultural Patterns in the Gulf of Carpentaria". My research will be contributing to Research Strands 2 and 3 of the larger project: Research Strand 2: Establishing the antiquity of Aboriginal occupation of various islands and detecting cultural variation through time across the study area. Research Strand 3: Investigating the material culture repertoires of Lardil, Yangkaal, Kaiadilt and Gangalidda people, focusing on fishing technologies, contemporary management of cultural heritage and the reproduction of Indigenous cultural identities.
