| Abstract
|
In July 2003 Australia joined a Pacific Forum Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands to help restore law and order and to aid long term planning in the troubled Pacific nation. During 1998-2003, the Solomon Islands underwent a political and economic crisis, cause by fighting between two rival matitia groups from Guadalcanal and Malaita. The paper looks at Ausralia's motivations and explains the background for the timing of the intervention.
