Abstract/Summary Philological research into Early Buddhism increasingly entails detailed comparison of parallel versions of a chosen discourse (sutra/sutta) preserved in two or more textual languages. Such research necessarily begins with identification of the parallel texts that are to be compared, and this identification 'is usually achieved using one of the several available catalogues of such sutra parallels. The present paper surveys five such catalogues, in historical sequence, with attention to features relevant for practical research. It reviews recent progress in the production of this genre of research tool and foreshadows likely future outcomes.
