Abstract Major developments in the literature pertaining to the Lewin-Kounin rigidity formulation were briefly discussed. Some recent studies comparing mentally retarded and normal children of equivalent MA on a variety of discrimination transfer tasks were found to support a rigidity characterization of retardate behaviour. While the groups usually showed no difference in performance in the initial acquisition of the discriminations, and also performed similarly on a positive transfer shift, the mentally retarded children were consistently inferior wherever a change of set was involved.
