Abstract Cell-mediated immune response was measured by the uptake of tritiated thymidine by lymphocytes cultured in serum-free medium in the presence and absence of different doses of phytohemagglutinin-M (PHA-M). Four groups were studied: (i) healthy women (controls), (ii) pregnant women, (iii) patients with carcinoma of the cervix, (iv) patients with ovarian carcinoma. The patients were studied before and after treatment which consisted of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. It was observed that the log index of lymphocyte response to the different doses of PHA-M could be segregated into log index <1.0, ≥1.0 <2.0, ≥ 2.0 < 3.0. In the control group there was a decrease in the frequency of the lymphocyte response in the <1.0 log index range as the concentration of PHA-M was increased. This decrease in frequency in the lower range was accompanied by an increase in frequencies in the higher range. Although there were similarities in the distribution of the lymphocyte response to PHA-M in the pregnant women and women with carcinoma of the cervix and ovary, it was possible to differentiate between the groups on the basis of the lymphocyte response to the different doses of PHA-M.
