Abstract A continuous stirred-tank reactor for a substrate-inhibited enzymatic reaction may have one or three steady states. Sufficient conditions for uniqueness of the steady state are obtained in both analytical and graphical form. Necessary and sufficient conditions for uniqueness or multiplicity of the steady states, as well as for their stability, are derived and expressed in diagrams. The use of these criteria as guides for the operation of enzyme reactors is illustrated.
