Abstract 1. Convtctlons for rape and attempted rape have rapldly increased in Queensland during the past ten years. 2. Thts increase has been much greater than that for ortences agatnst the person generally and for offences against the person by males only. 3. The tncrease in convtcttons for rape and attempted rape 18 greater than the population increase over this same period. 4. The type of male who frequents a brothel has similar cnaracteristtcs to those taktng part in “pack” rapes in Queensland. 5. “Pack” rapes and brothels provide similar sources of satisfaction to the male parttctpant. 6. The tncrease in the number of convtcttons for rape and attempted rape smce the closing of the brothels in Queensland has been slgniflcantly greater than the increase in convtcttons agalnst the person by males generally.
