Abstract Previous design procedures for pneumatic conveying systems are generally based on "rules of thumb" and on actual operating experience. In this paper we extend the recent analysis of Leung et al. to develop a quantitative design procedure for vertical pneumatic conveying systems for which the solid flow rate is dependent on the air flow rate and other parameters. The present analysis shows that for a given system solid flow rate is dependent on air flow rate going through a maximum at a certain air flow rate. Predictions from the present analysis are in reasonable agreement with the recent results of Decamps et al.
