Abstract A new method is proposed of determining the phase depth Vo0 of an ionosphere with randomly distributed small-scale irregularities. The ionosphere is irradiated with coherent radiation, the phase coherence of the echo is measured and Vo0 is deduced from this. The method yields an improvement in the value of Vo0 which may be measured.
