Abstract The development of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei on susceptible leaves of barley, Hordeum vulgare L., has been examined under the scanning electron microscope. Specimens were not subjected to pre-treatment and high accelerating voltages were used in the microscope. Studies on conidial germination, appressorial formation, host cell wall penetration and conidiophore formation are presented.
