Abstract Very little work has been done on the measurement of thermodynamic properties of oxygen in low-iron liquid copper-iron alloys in the temperature range 1250 to 1350°C. An attempt has been made in the present study to measure the oxygen contents of copper-iron alloys up to 10.20% Fe in situ by means of a semi-microbalance at the temperature of the experiment while equilibrating the liquid alloy samples, held in alumina crucibles, with mixtures of hydrogen-stearn-argon of known oxygen potentials. The results show that for each alloy composition the activity coefficient of oxygen remains constant and decreases as the iron content increases, in the oxygen unsaturated regions. The results further enabled the computation of the oxygen saturation values for each alloy composition as well as the temperature dependence of the interaction parameter for the effect of iron on oxygen in the Cu-O-Fe system. The free energIes of dissolution of gaseous oxygen in the liquid alloys of various compositions as well as those of the reaction H2(g) + [%O] in liq. Cu-Fe = H2 O(g) for the respective alloys have also been determined.
