Abstract Unlike the trimethyltin chloride-catalysed decomposition of hexamethyIditin to tetramethyltin and polymeric "dimethyltin", reaction with trimethyllead chloride initially yields tetramethyllead,trimethyltin chloride and lead(II) chloride. Concurrently and subsequently tetramethyllead and trimethyltin chloride react together. A mechanism involving dimethyltin formation and insertion into trimethyllead chloride is suggested.
