Abstract The free vibration for a new class of doubly connected composite plates with super-elliptical boundaries (with rounded corners) is treated in this study. The analysis is valid for laminated composite plates with an arbitrary number of plies and fibre orientations. This class of plates is superior to the rectangular plates in engineering practice because of the diffusion of stress concentration at the corners. In contrast to the commonly used discretization methods, the frequency response is analyzed in a globally continuous plate domain by the p-Ritz method. The solution procedure with two-dimensional polynomials and basic functions offers much simplicity and automation in dealing with arbitrary geometric boundary conditions. New free-vibration frequencies for symmetrically and unsymmetrically laminated plates with various fibre stacking sequences are presented. The vibration mode shapes for plates with different boundary conditions, super-elliptical powers and fibre orientation angles are illustrated.
