Abstract Published literature is reassessed and new data presented on the yield point behaviour of several eutectic systems. It is shown that for specimens which have undergone a standardised heat treatment prior to deformation, the yield stress may be more accurately displayed as σy vs λ plots rather than in the form of the customary Hall-Petch plots. It is shown that the difference in properties between the as-grown crystals and those having had a standardised furnace cooling heat treatment is due to several factors, the major of which are a higher dislocation density and solid solution strengthening in the as-grown crystals. The onset of yielding in unidirectionally solidified eutectic single crystals is suggested to be initiated at lamellar fault lines where lamellar terminations and non-planar lamellae act as internal stress raisers.
