Abstract A simple, inexpensive method for the removal of chlorine interference in the determination of chlorite ions in potable water is described. The method is based on the ability of an ion-exchange resin (Chelex-100) to react with chlorine but not with chlorite ion when mixtures of the two species are passed down a column containing the resin. The method was found to be accurate for chlorite concentrations in the range 0.08-13.0 mg 1-1 in the presence of at least a four-fold excess of chlorine (whether present as chlorine or chloramine) and the sample system used will remove chlorine concentrations of at least 6 mg 1-1. Attempts to regenerate the used Chelex-100 by removal of the chlorine proved unsuccessful. The method was successfully applied in trials at a water treatment plant.
