Abstract Regular oscillations of the virtual reflection-height of the ionospheric F-layer were observed on an h′(t) record run at 3.84 Mc/s at Brisbane on 12th August, 1965 at about 0900 E.S.T. (U.T. + 10 hr). The period of the oscillations ranged from 10 sec to 25 sec and the event lasted for about an hour. A few oscillations with a longer period (about 50 sec) were also present at the start on an h′(t) record running at 5.8 Mc/s. The h′(f{hook}) record for that period showed a series of cusps between the F1- and F2-layers penetration frequencies. Similar cusps were also noticed on the h′(f{hook}) records from Canberra, Camden (near Sydney), Salisbury (near Adelaide) and Hobart. It is shown that most of the features of the disturbance can be explained by postulating infrasonic waves, emanating from below F-region.
