Abstract The flat faceted shell element based on a constant strain triangle and a quadratic plate bending is one of the simplest elements for the analysis of thin shell structures. Its accurate performance depends on a fine discretization of mesh on the structure. By contrast a degenerated superparametric shell element, formulated from three-dimensional continuum with reduced numerical integration to avoid shear and membrane locking, is relatively complex, and such higher order elements can provide accurate solutions with fewer number of elements. However, the trade-off is that the stiffness formulation and solution of equations for the latter element can be very time consuming and may affect the overall efficiency. This paper provides a comparative study on the performance and efficiency of these two distinctive formulations of shell elements using published results. Both performance analyses obtained from a mainframe computer and a microcomputer are included for comparison and discussion.
