Abstract The problem of determining the correct number of terms to take in an exponential sum approximation to equally spaced data is considered. The Prony algorithm is used, together with singular value decomposition techniques. A criterion is established which is useful in estimating the number of terms when the data are subject to normally distributed, zero mean noise.
