Abstract Water did not quantitatively extract nitrate from an adsorbing soil. A 0.05 M K2SO4 extractant quantitatively recovered added nitrate and was compatible with the nitrate-specific ion electrode. The results obtained with the electrode and sulphate extractant were highly correlated (r=0.99, p<0.01) with those obtained using an extraction distillation procedure.
