Abstract The lectotype and additional material of Diporochaeta intermedia(Beddard, 1889) are redescribed. Contrary to a previous description, posterior hearts lie in XII, posterior spermathecae invariably in IX, and the nephridial bladders are U-shaped tubes. Location of hearts in XII, usual in the Megascolecidae, and the general anatomy of the lectotype remove the justification for separation of PerionychellaMichaelsen, 1907, from Diporochaeta. Union of the two genera and redefinition of Diporochaetas. lat. is, however, deferred to a monograph of Queensland species of the genus. A new subspecies, D. intermedia taipo, is recognised in addition to two morphs within the nominate subspecies. Collectively the species shows a variability greater than is usual at the specific level in the family but until larger series are available, resolution into further morphospecies cannot be attempted.
