Abstract Prediction of the amplitude of vortex-induced (aeolian) vibration of electrical transmission lines involves use of aerodynamic power transfer data. The paper reports new data for the power transfer to an oscillating cylinder in a cross flow. It is based upon measurement of the unsteady pressure distribution on a rigid model undergoing forced sinusoidal vibration. Tests were conducted over a Reynolds number range of 3440 to 4100, at incident free stream turbulence intensities of 0.1 and 4.5 percent. The intensity of fine scale turbulence is shown to have a major effect on measured power transfers, with the variation obtained being of the order of the discrepancies among previous experimental results.
