Abstract Thin film n-CdS/p-CdTe solar cells were electrodeposited under the same deposition conditions onto different transparent conducting oxide (TCO) substrates, namely fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO), tin-doped indium oxide with an overlayer of tin oxide (ITO/SnO2) and tin-doped indium oxide (ITO). The efficiencies of the cells deposited on FTO, ITO/SnO2 and ITO were 8.1%, 8.9% and 11.5% respectively. Analysis of current-voltage-temperature measurements showed that the current transport of the cells deposited on FTO or ITO/SnO2 was apparently controlled by recombination/generation in the depletion layer and also by the interface recombination and tunneling, whereas that for the cell deposited on ITO was controlled by both interface recombination and tunneling. Capacitance measurements showed that the frequency dispersion was higher for the less efficient cells which were deposited on tin oxide substrates relative to the highly efficient cell deposited on the indium oxide substrate.
