Abstract Rydberg orbitals have been found in the absorption spectrum of anthracene vapor from 47 880 to 57 900 cm-1. These are analyzed as belonging to five series, each with at least seven members converging to the same limit. Some multiplet structure is observed. The quantum defects for the series are 1.09 (s-type), 0.65 (p, in-plane), 0.59 (p, out-of-plane), 0.34 (d, in-plane), 0.28 (d, out-of-plane). The ionization potential of the molecule is 57 650 cm-1 (7.15 eV). The difference of this value from the value obtained by photoionization techniques is discussed and the possibility of an autoionizing level about 7.4 eV suggested.
