Abstract Statistical properties of, and return maps for, the Lorenz-like chaos exhibited by the 15NH3 FIR laser are examined and are compared with the Lorenz model. A method, based on returns maps, to unambiguously identify the sign switches of the laser field from intensity records is also presented.
