A general examination of primary sources indicates that between 1885 and 1895 there were persistent demands in letters, articles and criticism of the period for an art that described the peculiar qualities of Australian landscape and atmosphere and the way of life of the pioneer. The demands indicate that the writers held an emotional attachment to the land and they were conscious of a need for an expression of Australian identity. These symptoms, common to colonial nationalism, confirm the presence of nationalism in Australia at that period.

Nationalism'was a world-wide force in the 19th century and the Australian development followed the world pattern. The history of nationalism and literary nationalism is well covered by written material, but there is very ..ittle available material concerning nationalism in Australian art. The definitions of nationalism are varied and complex and the whole subject is controversial because it contains factors known to be in existence, but which cannot be categortsed. The debates on the subject are therefore stimulating and varied; few are discussed at primary source level. The movement is constantly referred to by art histoiians but as far as is known, little investigation has been carried out in this field of art.  ..............................
