Sydney Fancourt McDonald was born in Brisbane in 1885. He was educated at Brisbane Boys Grammar School and the University of Melbourne. He was part of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC.) during the First World War and was mentioned in despatches in 1916. He worked as a physician and lecturer on diseases of children and soldiers. From 1939 to 1945, he served in the RAAF. as a Group Captain and Consulting Physician. He was a foundation fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the first paediatrician within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland.
