In this Thesis alkaloid variability in Duboisia has been studied with a view to establishing the relative importance of the major determinants cf alkaloid pattern.

At the outset, semi-quantitative analytical procedures were developed to estimate the individual alkaloids to be found in living Duboisia tissue. These methods are based on ethanol extraction, paper chromatographic separation and estimation by a matching spot technique. Modifications are described which permit alkaloid purification by immiscible solvents or by a cation exchange resin. The procedures were evaluated by alkaloid re-extraction and alkaloid recovery data. A comparative study was also made of the values obtained by the various analytical methods on the same plant sample.   ........................
