Abstract Starting with the two concepts of language maintenance and language shift,this study provided as background the significance for Chinese immigrants to maintain their mother tongue in Australia and the four major ways used to achieve Chinese language maintenance for the second-generation Chinese immigrants.Research design including participant selection,measurements,and data collection procedures was presented.Results in terms of Chinese use at home and school,its learning resources and the Youth Chinese Test(YCT),were presented in tables and followed by a discussion of these results.This study on the one hand presents the status of Chinese language maintenance by this cohort of participants,and on the other hand provides empirical evidence for the claim that heritage learners of Chinese should be taught in different classes according to their proficiency levels.

本文从语言保持和语言更替两个概念入手,论述了海外华人汉语语言保持的意义;介绍了华裔小学生在澳大利亚学习汉语的四种途径;从研究对象的选择、调查与测试方法和数据采集程序等方面叙述了本文的研究设计;结果与分析部分总结了被试小学生汉语的使用、学习情况,汉语学习资源类别、分布、使用频度及其汉语水平测试(YCT)的结果。本研究一方面呈现了华裔青少年汉语保持水平参差不齐的状况,另一方面为汉语水平不同的中小学华裔学生分班教学的主张提供了实证依据。
