Abstract/Summary Sir Zelman Cowen, 1919-2011, a distinguished lawyer and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of New England, was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland in 1970. During his tenure at UQ he oversaw continued growth while coping with growing student activism, managing these challenges with dignity. In 1977 he was appointed Governor General of Australia, a position he held until 1982. He passed away at his home in Toorak, Victoria on 8th December 2011.
