Formatted abstract
This thesis is concerned with testing whether the two solvers sonicFoam and sonicDyMFoam in OpenFOAM are reliable for modelling transonic 2D wing flutter. This was attempted by first finding relevant test cases to model from a thorough literature review. The solvers were then tested by modelling a number of stationary test cases to find the flow field solutions, and pressure coefficient distribution plots along the profile of the aerofoil. These were then compared against experimental data. The solvers’ results did not agree well with the experimental data and it was determined at the eleventh hour that an error must have been made in modelling these test cases. The oscillatory test cases were going to be completed and the results included in this study however it was decided to omit these results. This was because these oscillatory test cases were based on the stationary test cases and it was deemed unsatisfactory to present results suspected to be incorrect. The methods used to model the stationary and oscillatory test cases were determined as part of this study and are included in this thesis. It is hoped that the work started here be completed in a future study using these methods
