Formatted abstract
Lean Six Sigma is a well-established process improvement managerial concept, created from the combination of Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing to reduce time and material waste. Lean Six Sigma investigations commonly follow a DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control) framework and continuously cycle through it. While this is applicable to automated or repetitive processes such as large-scale manufacturing operations, it is not as easily applied to small operations because they are often only semi-repetitive and are run in an ad hoc manner. In addition, resources limitations may reduce the scope of what can be achieved with DMAIC Lean Six Sigma. This makes it difficult to gather the necessary data in the Measure Phase which then impacts on the Analyse Phase. The aim of this research therefore was to investigate an alternative framework for Cycle 1 of Lean Six Sigma in order to prepare small operations for a DMAIC framework in Cycle 2.
