Formatted Abstract/Summary
The oral history interviews were conducted in preparation for the 1985 publication A place of light & learning : the University of Queensland's first seventy-five years by Malcolm Thomis, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the University of Queensland.

Some three dozen tape recordings were made of interviews with former staff and students of the University. The interviews were conducted by John Cole, Nancy Bonnin and others from 1979 to 1983.

Between 1999 and 2001, the University of Queensland Library converted the tape recordings into MP3 format. In 2015 the Library combined tracks with the same interviewees and converted the MP3 to WAV format.

Additional Notes Edwin James Droughton Stanley was educated at Christian Boys College and Ipswich Grammar School where he won a scholarship to The University of Queensland. He enrolled in an Arts degree at UQ in 1913 and graduated with honours in History in 1916.

After graduation, EJD Stanley joined the Crown Law Office. He was called to the Bar in 1919 and served as a Crown Prosecutor until he entered private practice in 1922. He was appointed Acting Supreme Justice in 1944 and a Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1947, making him the first graduate of UQ to be appointed to the Supreme Court. In 1923, he became the first graduate of UQ to be elected to the University Senate.

His years on the Senate saw the establishment of the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Law, the debate over the site of the university’s new home, and the building programme for the new site at St Lucia. Stanley served on the Senate alongside Sir Matthew Noonan, AJ Thynne, William Forgan Smith, JD Story, Archbishop Duhig and Sir James Blair (Stanley’s uncle). He remained an elected member of the UQ Senate until 1950. Sir James William Blair, KCMG, 1870 to 1944, was an Australian politician, lawyer and judge. He was elected to the Queensland Parliament on several occasions and became Attorney-General in 1903. In later life he took up an appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland and went on to become the Chief Justice of that court. Blair took on many civic roles including that of Chancellor of the University of Queensland in 1927.

The personal papers of Edwin James Droughton Stanley are held at the Fryer Library.
