Formatted Abstract/Summary
The oral history interviews were conducted in preparation for the 1985 publication A place of light & learning : the University of Queensland's first seventy-five years by Malcolm Thomis, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the University of Queensland.

Some three dozen tape recordings were made of interviews with former staff and students of the University. The interviews were conducted by John Cole, Nancy Bonnin and others from 1979 to 1983.

Between 1999 and 2001, the University of Queensland Library converted the tape recordings into MP3 format. In 2015 the Library combined tracks with the same interviewees and converted the MP3 to WAV format.

Additional Notes In 1921 Ernest Stewart Edmiston was UQ’s first graduate of the degree course in applied science in industrial chemistry, which was first introduced in 1916, 30 years before any other Australian University. Professor Edmiston headed the course in applied science in industrial chemistry from 1936 to 1965, when he transferred to the newly formed Chemical Engineering Department. Formerly Royal Australian Chemical Institute president and three times acting Chemistry Professor, he retired from UQ at the end of 1966. (Biography published first in The Fryer Library online exhibition, UQ Memory.)

Francis Norman Lahey (b. 20 April 1912 - ?) obtained his BSch in 1935 and a DSc in 1942 from the University of Queensland (UQ). After graduating in 1935, Lahey became a research assistance and demonstrator under Thomas Gilbert Jones, who was then a lecturer in Organic Chemistry at UQ. Lahey went on to become a Senior Lecturer in Organic Chemistry (1943-1949), Senior Lecturer (1949-1951), Research Professor (1951-1965), Dean of Faculty of Science 1958-1959 and Head of Department (1966-1970). He was a recipient of the David Syme Research Prize (1944).

Stewart Byron Watkins completed his M.Sc. in 1918 and lectured in chemistry at the University of Queensland before taking up the position of Supervisor of the Central Technical College, from 1919-1941. He travelled throughout Queensland from 1941, when he worked with the Toxicological Section of the Government Chemical Laboratory. He published many papers and articles on horticulture and was appointed to the Council of the Horticultural Society of Queensland. The personal papers of Stewart Byron Watkins are held at the Fryer Library.
