Abstract This article discusses Shirley Clarke's film version of The Living Theatre's production of The Connection under the rubric of the post-Brechtian. The central premise of this article is that the cinematic adaptation of The Connection cannot be dissociated from The Living Theatre's production and the theatre group's preference for an acting style that valorises the performance in progress over dramaturgical precision. By identifying the moments when the camera becomes performative, that is, a provocateur of gestures and attitudes, I explain how performance becomes the subject and the object of the film. The article focuses on the film's dialogue with performance art, in order to theorize a pathway that will help us reread other cinematic objects through the ‘performative’ lens, namely the employment of performance as a process of exploration/discovery rather than the reproduction of a fixed script.
