Formatted Abstract/Summary
Michael White's broad and continuing interest in maritime matters is more than likely to extend to the history of the world's great harbours, particularly those which have had, like Hamburg, a close connection with the history of Australia. This story of the Right Worshipful Company of Merchant Adventurers of England in Hamburg (the 'Hamburg Company') and of those of their 19th century successors who helped advance Australia is offered in Michael's honour.

Links between Britain and the Free and Hanse City of Hamburg, the most anglophile and cosmopolitan of German cities, have been close for hundreds of years. Hamburg has absorbed people from many parts of Europe. British businessmen, Huguenot refugees, Dutch fruit growers, Sephardic Jews and many people from other lands were welcomed in Hamburg and found it a place in which to live, work and prosper.
